Frost In Contemporary Popular Culture

As evidence of Frost’s staying power, here are some examples of recent references to Frost’s poetry in popular culture:

• On the TV show Murder in a Small Town, Season 2 : Episode 2 (aired on September 30, 2025), a character says, “Home is the place where, when you have to go there, they have to take you in”, and this line is attributed to “Robert Frost” (at approximately 41 minutes).  (This is a based on a quote from Frost’s THE DEATH OF THE HIRED MAN.)
• The movie Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024) starts with Frost’s poem FIRE AND ICE (which is reprinted on page 72 of the book 11 New Roads Not Taken).
• On the TV show Outlander, Season 7 : Episode 3, aired on Starz on June 23, 2023, episode title “Death Be Not Proud”, a character says, “Home is where, when you have to go there, they have to take you in” and attributes to it “Robert Frost” (at approximately 41:02 – 41:14).  (This is a based on a quote from Frost’s THE DEATH OF THE HIRED MAN.  The episode’s title is the title of a John Donne poem.)
• On the TV show The Empress, Season 1 : Episode 4, aired on Netflix on September 29, 2022, a character says, “If you want to win, you take the road less traveled by” (at approximately 39:20).
• The movie Marionette (2020) shows two roads diverging in a wooded area, with the travelers’ making the choice of which road to take (at approximately 19:30).  (There is no verbal mention of Frost or use of language from THE ROAD NOT TAKEN.)
• Additional examples are found on pages 276–77 of the book 11 New Roads Not Taken.

Of course, there are many, many more mentions of Frost, including those from earlier in time – e.g., the title of Dr. M. Scott Peck’s best-selling book The Road Less Traveled (originally published in 1978); and examples in Stephen King’s writing.

Also, there are also many other cultural references that interconnect with Frost poetry, without expressly mentioning Frost or his works – for example:

• “You cannot travel 2 roads” is a line in a poem (entitled, “FEAST GREEN BEAST”) by Jim Morrison, lead singer of the Doors.  See Morrison, Jim, The Collected Works of Jim Morrison: Poetry, Journals, Transcripts, and Lyrics (United States, HarperCollins Publishers, 2021), p.355.
